Located in Scandinavia, west of Sweden, Norway is famous for
the fjords on its west coast. In fact, the whole country is
great if you want to see a wide variety of natural scenery in
one place. There is quite a bit of other things to do and see as
well. The northern part of the country is so far north that
there are some days in summer when the sun doesn't set.
Likewise, in winter, there are times when the sun doesn't rise.
That said, there are places in Norway that are habitable quite
comfortably. If you're looking for an Arctic getaway without the
full harshness of the Arctic weather, then Norway might be a
good destination for you.
Places to Go in Norway
Oslo - The capital city of
Norway is full of museums and other great places to visit. The
nightlife is actually pretty active here as well.
Bergen - At one time this
was the capital of Norway. Today it is the second largest city
in the country, but it is said to be a wonderful place for
culture and partying at night.
Fredrikstad - If you're
staying in Oslo, this is a good little getaway that could be
considered a day trip. It's an old town that's surrounded by
beauty. You have to see it for yourself to really appreciate
it.
Trondheim - If you like
cathedrals, you're going to want to stop in this city - and
stay. There's a lot of great architecture to admire.
Jostedalsbreen - Want to
see the largest glacier on the European mainland? This is it.
See it before it melts - although that may not be for a while.
Traveling in Norway
Language - The official
language is Norwegian, but most younger people speak English
really well.
Sights - There's a Norway
in a Day tour that you can get that will show you the major
sites around Oslo during your stay.
Hiking - With the great
wilderness and scenery, you know Norway is going to be a great
place for hiking. Be sure to take safety precautions before
venturing out.
Skiing - Because of the
location and the mountains, skiing is also really big in
Norway as you might imagine. If you want to hit the slopes,
you're going to be doing it around some of the best scenery in
the world.
Shopping - If you plan to
do a lot of shopping in Norway, you should know that it is
rather expensive, even compared to European standards. You
should plan accordingly before you arrive so you'll have
enough money to get everything you want.
Eating - The harsh northern
climate makes for little variety of food, but the Norway
cuisine is liked by many people. Fresh fish is really big in
Norway.
Norway: the Great White North
If you want to visit a Scandinavian country but haven't
decided which one yet, you should really give Norway
consideration if you like the rugged outdoors and natural
beauty. Close to the arctic but not too close, Norway has a lot
to offer travelers who want something that will stimulate their
mind and body. With a thriving nightlife in a lot of cities and
breathtaking natural scenery all around, Norway is a great
winter wonderland that you can escape to relatively cheap.
Things are more expensive in Norway on average, but if you plan
carefully before arriving, you're sure to have a great time.
